Two Sudirman Tower

Innovative Formwork Solutions at Two Sudirman Tower
Jakarta, Indonesia

In the heart of Jakarta’s business district, the Two Sudirman Tower Project is reshaping the skyline. When completed in 2028, Tower 1 will rise to 329 m and Tower 2 to 273 m, making them among the tallest buildings in Indonesia. Beneath them sit four basement levels and a sprawling podium, forming a total footprint of 23,596 m².

Today, with the project already reaching the typical levels, the structural progress is clear. But behind the rising concrete lies a story of engineering innovation—where carefully chosen formwork and protection systems are enabling the team to tackle Jakarta’s toughest high-rise challenges.

Meeting the Customer’s Challenges

The joint venture between China State Construction Engineering Corporation and Taisei Corporation set three clear expectations from day one:

  • Flexibility; to handle variable slab heights, non-typical floor geometries, and dense reinforcement.

  • Efficiency; to maintain an aggressive schedule and minimize crane dependency.

  • Safety; to protect workers while operating at extreme heights, with a zero-accident target

Complicating matters further, the project is located adjacent to some of Jakarta’s MRT tunnels, preventing the use of soil anchors for lateral support. The design also calls for architectural-finish inclined columns up to 16 m high in the podium, and monolithic construction for typical floors to overcome heavy rebar congestion—with floor-to-floor heights of 3.8 m for the residential tower and 4.5 m for the mixed-use office/hotel tower.

To meet the completion deadline, the construction cycle for typical floors must be less than seven days per floor.  These are not challenges for standard solutions; they demand custom engineering and world-class temporary works systems.

The Right Systems for the Right Tasks

DUO – Lightweight and Versatile Formwork for Groundworks and Columns

The DUO system is a handset solution designed for sites with limited or no crane access. The largest panel (135 x 90 cm) weighs only 24.9 kg yet withstands fresh concrete pressures of up to 50 kN/m². This makes it ideal for foundations, bases, retaining walls, and lift shaft pits.

Columns are efficiently formed with the Multi Panel 135 x 75 weighing just 22.9 kg. Using the “windmill” configuration, columns can be adjusted in 5 cm increments to achieve perfectly square results and handle concrete pressures up to 80 kN/m².

For finishing, the DUO Chamfer Strip creates a precise 15 x 15 mm beveled edge without nails. Once crane access becomes available, the system easily transition to gang-formed applications using the DUO Crane Eye lifting up to 14.6 m² (12 panels) with just two hooks.

PERI UP MD & MULTIFLEX – Adapting to Podium and Basement Levels

The MULTIFLEX system, supported by PERI UP MD shoring, has been the backbone for slab and beam formwork. With spans of up to 4 m, it adapts to irregular geometries and supports high loads.

It also provides an innovative bridging solution to overcome the poor founding conditions of the berm embankment used to stabilize the secant walls. For this, a top-down construction method was adopted around the perimeter of the podium, utilizing RCS rails as primary bearers to span soil inclines. Later these RCS rails were repurposed into climbing protection screens—demonstrating efficiency through versatility of PERI formwork and shoring systems.

HANDSET Alpha – Lightweight and Universal

The Two Sudirman Towers demand strong yet flexible wall and column solutions. PERI HANDSET Alpha, designed specifically for customer’s needs in the APAC region, offers panels weighing under 34.6 kg/m² yet capable of withstanding 75 kN/m² of fresh concrete pressure.

From 1.8 m × 1.8 m perimeter columns to thick core walls and smaller podium columns, all can be formed without additional components. One product, multiple applications.

MONOCAST Aluminium Formwork – A First in Indonesia

For the typical floor levels, a monolithic construction method has been applied.  This required a hybrid solution, including the first-ever deployment of MONOCAST aluminium formwork in Indonesia, combined with HANDSET Alpha for walls and columns.

Beams and slabs can now be poured in a single, seamless cycle—saving time, reducing labour, and ensuring consistent quality. For a project targeting weekly floor cycles, MONOCAST paired with HSA is a true game-changer.

RCS Protection Screens & VARIOKIT Platforms – Safety First

At 300 m above ground, safety for workers is non-negotiable. RCS Protection Screens enclose work zones, shield against wind, and climb hydraulically without cranes. Integrated VARIOKIT platforms with a customized design at 3.25 m wide makes material handling faster, safer, and more efficient.

ACS Self-Climbing Systems – Smart Shaft Construction

At the heart of the structures lies the elevator shafts, and the PERI ACS system provides multi-platform access whilst climbing hydraulically—independent of cranes. This allows reinforcement, formwork, and pouring activities to occur in parallel, accelerating shaft construction while freeing up crane time for other critical lifts.

Inclined Column Solution

For the heavy architectural inclined corner columns in the residential Tower, PERI engineers worked closely with the customer to provide a safe, workable solution with the desired high-spec concrete finish needed for such a prestigious project.  A combination of VARIO GT24, VARIOKIT, and PERI UP MD systems were utilized to pour the 16 m high inclined columns in three sections, ensuring the highest possible concrete finish quality.

Delivering Benefits to the Customer

The combination of these systems brings clear advantages to the project:

  • Faster Construction Cycles – Automatic climbing and efficient formwork handling shorten construction timelines

  • Reduced Crane Dependency – RCS and ACS systems free up crane capacity for other critical tasks

  • Enhanced Safety – Full-height protection and stable working platforms minimize the risk of accidents

  • Flexibility in Execution – Systems can adapt quickly to design adjustments or site conditions

With the right mix of PERI technology, the Two Sudirman Tower project demonstrates how tailored formwork and protection solutions can deliver speed, quality, safety, and cost efficiency, meeting client expectations while setting new standards for high-rise construction in Jakarta.

Looking Ahead

With Level 9 marking the last conventional cast, the project now transitions into full monolithic construction using the MONOCAST + HANDSET Alpha hybrid system. From Level 10 onward, the target is one floor per week.

As Two Sudirman Tower rises, it’s not just concrete and steel climbing skyward, it’s a showcase of how integrated formwork engineering and innovative protection systems can deliver Jakarta’s tallest, safest, and most efficient high-rise yet.
